Nike athlete and Cincinnati Bengals football player, Ja’Marr Chase, leads the new campaign from Nike and Bode Rec., celebrating the revival of the Astrograbber with a showcase inundated in historic sport-style influence.

Shot by Eduardo Cerruti and Stephanie Draime, the latest campaign photographs Chase sporting two new colorways — green leather and black mesh — cementing the footwear as a contemporary sportswear staple. Peppered throughout the images are antiques collected during Bode founder and designer, Emily Adams Bode Aujla’s, travels to Tokyo while launching the initial Nike and Bode Rec. campaign. The historical genius, however, does not stop there.

Inspired after visiting Nike World Headquarters and learning that co-founder of Nike, Bill Bowerman, created Nike’s famous waffle sole using his wife’s waffle iron, Bode Aujla exercised her own take on a Proustian remembrance of things past — a reverence of the handcrafted elements that came to define early Nike footwear.

The shoe’s classic gridiron look, which originally debuted in 1974 shortly after Nike’s famed Waffle Trainer, upgrades the turf shoe with two new colorways — a black woven textile design and a green leather style influenced by a pair of Bowerman’s DIY hand-dyed waffle joggers that Bode Aujla spotted during her visit to the Department of Nike Archives.

“Bode Rec. is a line devoted to the history and evolution of athletic apparel,” Bode Aujla says, “with a personal tie to football inspired by the time my dad spent playing the sport in high school and college.” In refreshing the Astrograbber silhouette, Nike and Bode have tailored its appeal for contemporary resonance, permitting the shoe to serve as an homage to both the silhouette’s football roots and its present-day appeal.
Both colorways are available at bode.com, Bode retail locations in Los Angeles and New York City, and a new Bode boutique in Paris. The black colorway will be available on SNKRS and at select Nike and Bode Rec. retail partners.
