Nike Produces Face Shields During COVID-19 Crisis

The brand is repurposing Nike Air soles into PPE for healthcare workers.

For their contribution to COVID-19 relief efforts, Nike will be producing face shields and other personal protective equipment (PPE) for first responders of the pandemic. The manufacturing company will be utilizing various Nike-owned materials, including those intended for Nike Air soles.

“Without proper facial protection, healthcare workers are at a higher risk of contract the virus, which could place substantial strain on the healthcare workforce in the months ahead,” said Miko Enomoto, M.D., an associate professor at OHSU School of Medicine.

Working with health care professionals at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), Nike is currently designing innovative equipment to protect hospital workers against COVID-19, including full-face shields and air-purifying respirator (PAPR) lenses. The brand has also reinvented its signature Air soles into PAPR helmets.

“Nike’s generous response to the COVID-19 crisis helps to instill an added layer of confidence and support for healthcare workers, that we can safely carry out the jobs we were born to do,” Enomoto told Nike News.

The first shipment of face shields and PAPR lenses was delivered to OHSU on Friday, April 3. Additional PPE will also be donated to other regions across the state of Oregon — the location of Nike’s World Headquarters. Amidst the anxieties of the COVID-19 crisis, Nike is continually seeking new ways of supporting healthcare professionals at this time.

“We are forever grateful to the commitment of our colleagues at Nike, as their dedication to our united effort will help save lives,” Enomoto said.
