Nike’s $15 Million USD Pledge to help fight COVID-19
Check out what Nike is doing to aid in the repercussions of a worldwide pandemic.
As the coronavirus burden grows heavier for all, Nike has promised to relieve some of that pressure. Nike leaders, Nike, and the Nike Foundation are collectively donating over $15 million in the fight against the global coronavirus crisis.
While the Nike slogan “Just Do It” has long encouraged its customers, Nike itself is practicing what they preach. Especially in a time when spirits could use some motivation and financial support, Nike is stepping up. After announcing the temporary closure of several retail locations, $10 million being donated to the home company’s home base in Oregon. This donation is made possible from the help from Chairman Emeritus and co-founder Phil Knit and wife Penny, Chairman of the Board Mark and Kathy Parker and president/CEO John and Eileen Donahoe. This generous gesture will be split among several organizations within the Oregon community, including the Oregon Health and Science University, Oregon Community Recovery, and the Oregon Food Bank. Thanks to these Nike leaders, personal donations will improve care, testing, and access to food for those in need.
Likewise, the Nike Foundation aids a $1 million donation to the global COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. In funding, the Nike Foundation hopes to support the efforts by the World Health Organization, as well as partners to support other countries preparing and already responding to the crisis. In addition, $1 million will be sent to the Oregon Community Recovery Fund; $1.1 million in support of community partners through the King Baudouin Foundation; $250,000 to the Mid-South Food Bank location in Memphis, Tennesee; $250,000 to the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis’ COVID-19 Regional Response Fund; and $500,000 to the Boston Foundation’s COVID-19 Response Fund.
Announced earlier in January, NIKE, Inc made a commitment to donate 10 million RMB ($1.4 million) to the China Youth Development Foundation in assistance to the frontline workers, patients, and supplies and equipment.
Nike ended its statement by stating, “To further support communities where NIKE employees live and work, we will also support a two-to-one match for any donations to support COVID-19 responses locally, nationally and internationally.” Check out the official statement here.
