OMEGA Releases New Watch in Honor of the Silver Snoopy Award’s 50th Anniversary

The Swiss luxury watch manufacturers received the “Silver Snoopy Award” from the astronauts at NASA back in 1970 for their unique contributions to space exploration.

Swiss luxury watch manufacturer OMEGA has reportedly released a new watch to commemorate the Silver Snoopy Award’s 50th Anniversary. The decision stems from the brand’s history with NASA and space exploration.

In 1970, OMEGA received the “Silver Snoopy Award” from the astronauts at NASA, which recognized the brand’s unique contributions to space exploration, as well as the timepiece’s vital support during the rescue of Apollo 13.

In the past, the brand’s manual winding Moonwatch also gained significant worldwide attention during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission as the first watch worn by an astronaut while walking on the Moon. Since then, the brand has branched out into other sectors of exploration, creating watches inspired by the Manhattan skyline, protection of the ocean, classic cinema, and sailing

The Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary piece features beloved Peanuts character Snoopy as an embossed silver medallion on the blue subdial at 9 o’clock. Snoopy is shown wearing his famous spacesuit, in the exact style of the silver pin that NASA astronauts give to award recipients.

Notable features include the dial on the watch, which is also silver and laser-engraved with Ag925. It includes two additional blue subdials, as well as blue PVD angle-shaped hour markers and hands. This anti-magnetic innovation also holds a Master Chronometer certification from the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS).

On the case back, things get interesting as Snoopy goes into orbit thanks to his animated black and white Command and Service Module (CSM). When the chronograph seconds hand is in use, Snoopy takes a trip around the mysterious far side of the moon – just like the Apollo 13 crew. The lunar surface is decorated on the sapphire crystal using a unique micro-structured metallisation.

But that’s not all! The tiny Earth disc also rotates once per minute, in sync with the watch’s small seconds hand, which symbolizes the actual rotation of the Earth. The iconic quote, “Eyes on the Stars”, is written in a font similar to that of a comic.

For watch connoisseurs who worry about the integrity and quality of the case back, fear not! The NAIAD LOCK keeps all case back engravings in the correct, upright position. Also inscribed into the case back is the year 1970, which is the same year that OMEGA received the Silver Snoopy Award. There’s even a tribute to the imperilled Apollo 13 mission which happened that same year.

Showcasing OMEGA’s overall superb attention to detail, the watch features the trajectory of the Apollo 13 mission embossed on the lining. This strap is attached to a 42 mm case in stainless steel, which is inspired by the 4th generation Speedmaster (the first watch worn on the moon in 1969). The tachymeter scale, with the iconic “Dot over Ninety”, is shown in white enamel on a blue ceramic [ZrO2] bezel ring.

The Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary is available from OMEGA starting at $9,600. It includes a full 5-year warranty. Eager fans will receive the watch in its own Apollo 13 presentation box, complete with a microfiber cleaning cloth, a brochure, and a magnifying glass to help you get up close to the details.
