Alejandro Gomez Palomo kicks off the Paris menswear season with a bang with Palomo Spain SS20. The show, the first of Paris Fashion Week Men's, was staged in the Spanish Embassy, flanked by portraits of the Bay of Naples. Taking inspiration from the ancient city of Pompeii, the collection combines raw material and royal European tropes to re-envision history as chic menswear. Palomo’s imaginative vision came to life with his costume army in this idyllic and symbolic location.

The collection radiates European power. Breastplates are morphed into corsets and intricate lace comprises other flowing garments. The Roman styled toga is reimagined as a ruffled chiffon men’s dress. Palomo redefines and reflects the architectural shape of Pompeii with the checkered and crochet dress designs, referencing mosaics. Faux fiber sneakers foreshadow Centurion’s sandals. Furthermore, garlands, masks, and tote bags are outlined with erotic 'secret cabinet' images that seamlessly fit with the bold attire.

Palomo sets the stage for the dramatic and meaningful themes of this menswear season. The show fills up a subliminal space of the past and future. Moreso, with Pink Floyd synthesizers vibrating off the 17th Century tapestries, the breathtaking show moves through a European drama directed from Palomo's sharp vision. Layered with simple forms and versatile dresses, the collection dynamically couples high conceptualization and fabrication with historic symbolism.
