On Monday, Oct. 2 the world unfortunately lost yet another rock music icon when the unexpected death of Tom Petty was announced. The classic singer-songwriter suffered from cardiac arrest and later could not be revived at the hospital, dying at the age of 66.

The artist was known for his work in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and his ardently American rock n' roll sound and lyricism that saw a beautiful vision for what life is or idealistically could be with classics like "Free Fallin'," "American Girl," and "I Won't Back Down" among others. As he sings, "You belong somewhere you feel free," on the 1994 track "Wildflowers," Petty's utterly wonderful rock transports you to the dreamy, thoughtful world that he dreamed of - the world that he hoped his music established for his fans.

Below, VMan remembers the legendary artist through some of his most iconic photos.
