Pharrell Williams is launching a new series “Voices of Fire” on Netflix, Variety reported.
The unscripted series will follow Bishop Ezekiel Williams, Pharrell’s uncle, as he travels across Hampton Roads, Virginia searching for undiscovered talent. Pharrell will Executive Produce the series as well appear on-screen as his uncle sets out to build a gospel choir.
Pharrell’s collaboration with Netflix was announced at the Essence Festival Sunday. The announcement comes as Netflix has added a number of unscripted series to their platform this year such as “The Circle” and most recently “The Floor is Lava.”
The specific venture into docuseries is also nothing new for Netflix. Shows like “Making a Murderer,” a 2015 docuseries produced by Netflix, spearheaded a wave of programming change for the streaming platform.
A number of team members from I Am Other, Pharrell’s multi-media company, will be heading the series with Pharrell and Netflix. Mimi Valdés and Arthur Smith are among a number of people who will serve as Executive Producers on the unscripted series.
Pharrell is no stranger to a Netflix collaboration. Deadline reported back in June that Pharrell is developing a feature-length musical about Juneteenth, the end of slavery, with Netflix. The musical film is also set to be a collaboration with “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris.
