So seems the message behind the model and rapper’s newest track, “Get Money,” a hypnotizing, catchy single about the desire to get money and all of its perks. The song comes ahead of the release of the artist’s EP Stardust, which will be his first major-label project after signing to Asylum Records. A pioneer of Baltimore’s experimental rap scene, Dawson demonstrates his fearless approach to music on “Get Money,” effortlessly delivering rhythmic verses over a bumping beat. With an affirmative message and a feel-good vibe, it’s easy to imagine the song becoming a staple on many motivational playlist.

Talking about the process behind “Get Money” and its music video, Dawson said, “It’s about getting money any way possible and just the perfect montage to get money to. The inspiration came from a Kendrick Lamar cadence on ‘ELEMENT.,’ and I created the beat around my vocals.” Of course, it wouldn’t be a Dawson track without an homage to his home city. “This song feels like an anthem for Baltimore and reminds me of the late single from Tim Trees called ‘Bankroll,’” he revealed. “It’s a simple beat but creates room for a catchy wordplay.”

The “Get Money” music video has an absurdist quality, as though you’re watching fragments of a dream play out on screen. A frequent fish-eye lens and camera work that makes Dawson appear somewhat removed from his locations help the video channel an energetic, off-kilter aesthetic. “Get Money” might be about putting in the work so you can play, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
