A Queen biopic has been in the works for many years now, getting off to a rocky start after first enlisting Sacha Baron Cohen, who subsequently dropped out due to creative differences, and a long search for another leading man to play the icon Freddie Mercury. The wait, it seems, is finally over: the remaining members of the legendary band have confirmed that Rami Malek has been cast as Mercury and the project is going ahead.

According to the band's statement, pre-production begins next week, with Malek in the lead, with Roger Taylor and Brian May saying the actor "has great presence and is utterly dedicated to the project. He's completely living and breathing Freddie already, which is wonderful." (As for who will play themselves and the other members of the band, "That is news for another day," they wrote). The film, tentatively titled Bohemian Rhapsody, will be directed by Brian Singer, known for directing the X-Men franchise and The Usual Suspects.
