A standing room only affair accompanied by a feast of breads and cheeses, waffles by the pile, and half full glasses and bottles of wine was the setting for Raf Simons' Berlin inspired FW18 Menswear collection. Taking us back to the '80s, Raf’s accredited muse for this presentation is the youthful German Film, Christiane F., a haunting coming of age narrative that depict the realities that come with drug abuse and addiction.

The collection itself is a substantial throwback stylistically. One unexpected and destined to be a trending twist, is his take on the dickey. Shaped and knit as a sweater, Simons' dickey fell differently on each of the models' chests, requiring second glances to actually digest the dickey’s architecture and function. Potently using the themes in Christiane F., LSD, XTC and DRUGS as well as stills from the actual film, were colorfully printed on some of the garments, feeding the juxtaposition of the enticing yet, destructive realities of a substance fueled world. As far as accessories go, each model donned vibrant elbow-length latex gloves some with a cigarette case acting as a cuff.

In true Raf form, he intelligently crafted a universe for his garments to thrive in, using his intuitive aesthetic expertise to evoke plethoras of reactionary stimulation. Unafraid of the natural renaissance of certain trends, Simons' paved the way by creatively using his experiences as an instrument--making his FW18 collection a notable party in Berlin.
