Ralph Lauren Debuts Team USA’s Closing Ceremony Uniform for the Tokyo Olympic Games

Athletes will wear the uniforms during the closing ceremony parade of the rescheduled 2020 Olympics.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are a year late, but Ralph Lauren has used that time to create some of their most innovative designs, with a game-changing focus on sustainable craftsmanship. David Lauren, Chief Innovation and Branding Officer and Vice Chairman of the Board, stated: “Following a year marked by isolation and strife, this summer’s Games are a true testament to the resiliency of the human spirit and the universal power of sport to energize and unite the world. As we continue to come together and celebrate and compete, we must also embrace our responsibility to protect the planet we all call home.” The brand honors that responsibility with a series of groundbreaking updates to their manufacturing process.

To create the vivid red, white, and blue shades on the uniforms, Ralph Lauren collaborated with Dow, using the ECOFAST™ Pure Sustainable Textile Treatment. This pre-treatment solution optimizes cotton textiles for a more sustainable dyeing process that requires less water, chemicals, and energy. The athletes’ Olympic patches are made from MIRUM®, a plant-based leather alternative.

Crisp white drawstring jackets and patriotic striped belts are made from Repreve® recycled polyester, which is derived from plastic water bottles. The jackets have a sporty and slightly retro look that celebrates American design and manufacturing – each item in Team USA’s uniform is, of course, manufactured in the United States. The collection debuted with 100 days until the Olympics, and that time is only ticking away. There’s still a lot to consider about the logistics of holding such an international event as the pandemic continues, but vaccines are cause for hope, and the Olympics have always been a source of global unity. Select items from the 2020 Team USA collection are available for purchase on the Ralph Lauren website.
