The rapper leaves behind a legacy of iconic songs and albums

DMX, rapper, and actor who was an influential figure in the scope of late ’90s and 2000s hip hop, has passed away at the age of 50. His family released a statement confirming the same after he had been admitted to the hospital following a heart attack on April 2.

“We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days,” said a statement released by the rapper’s family.

Born Earl Simmons, the New York rapper was known for his gruff style and a raspy growl that has become a trademark of his songs. His first five albums all went to number one, with It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, and …And Then There Was X accruing critical acclaim and becoming big sellers. His songs like “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” and “Party Up (Up in Here)” cemented his legacy as a popular figure in the rap scene, despite his continuing legal troubles.

The rapper was first admitted to White Plains Hospital on April 2 after a heart attack which was reportedly caused by an overdose. He had traced trouble with drugs such as crack cocaine to as early as when he was 14 years old. According to his manager, soon after entering the hospital, he had entered a vegetative state and was put on life support. Several prominent artists and celebrities expressed support for him during this time.

“Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him,” their statement continues on. “Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time. Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle, and the man the world knew as DMX. We will share information about his memorial service once details are finalized.”

Our sympathies are with his family and friends at this time. May he rest in peace.
