Imagine getting a tattoo and having no control over what it looks like. No, we’re not talking about your last debauched Saturday night. Rather, we’re referring to tattoo and fine artist Scott Campbell’s aptly named new exhibition, Whole Glory, which bows at New York’s Milk Gallery this Thursday evening (Nov. 12).  And if you’re a fan of Campbell’s ink, this show is not to be missed. Campbell, whose clients include Courtney Love, Sting, Marc Jacobs, and Robert Downey Jr., among others, created a 50-foot-long painting, cut a hole in it, and installed it in the gallery. Said hole is positioned above a chair, and happens to be just large enough to fit a human arm. “On the other side of that hole will be me,” explains Campbell. “I will tattoo (for free) any arm that comes through. There is no communication. I tattoo whatever I am inspired to do, and the recipient doesn’t get to see until it’s finished.”

Indeed, it’s a pretty risky move. But considering you could walk away with a free Scott Campbell tattoo, we’d say it’s worth it.

Whole Glory is on view at Milk Gallery from Thursday, November 12 through Sunday, November 15
