Alexander McQueen reimagines the suit for the Men’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection. For the new designs, creative director Sarah Burton takes inspiration from science and structure. Flowing brush strokes and dazzling gemstones decorate tailored suits. They replicate the texture of the moon’s surface and the twinkling stars in the night sky.

Muted colors create the color story for the collection. Light hues of white and the pastel tones of powder blue and baby pink combat the deep shades of black. All the shades are reminiscent of an evening glow, further showing the impact of science and nature. The combination of these colors allows for the sleekness of Burton’s design to shine and creates a lightness to the garments.

For the suits themselves, Burton mixes between the traditional silhouette and new structures. Long sleeve jackets button at the side, creating an asymmetrical look. Other jackets feature turned-up lapels and an uneven cut along the bottom, creating an ‘80s feel to the futuristic collection. Burton takes the look a step further by introducing sleeveless vests and jackets that have cutouts and back harnesses. They bring a modern, flamboyant look to otherwise traditional and classic pieces.

Denim jackets are paired with structured jeans for a high fashion take on the Canadian tuxedo. Thick knit sweaters are deconstructed with cutout details, adding interesting shapes to a formerly shapeless garment. Leather provides a strong, dominant presence, contrasting against the flowing geometric patterns mentioned earlier.

While the artistic nature of the Men’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection fits in with the artistic designs of the Fall/Winter 2022 collection, it focuses on the details of the cosmos and the night sky, rather than a bright abstraction of colors.
