SpaceX Could Change the Game for Human Space Travel

Watch the historic launch today.

Only three weeks ago, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk was welcoming his newborn boy to this planet, but today his commercial aerospace company is sending two NASA astronauts into space, for the first time ever. And we are all invited to watch.

The mission called Demo-2 will mark the first human journey for SpaceX. After 10 years—despite COVID-19—NASA will see the return of human spaceflight to US territory. Since the end of the Space Shuttle Program in 2011, NASA astronauts have been traveling to Russia to train there, costing NASA as much as $86 million a seat. The Space Agency has since turned to the private sector to develop a safe spacecraft that could send humans into space—and here we are today. Although a controversial move, “the thinking was that commercial companies could drive down costs and spur innovation, and NASA would have more time and resources to focus on exploring deeper into the solar system,” according to CNN

We can all view this historic moment by tuning in to NASA’s YouTube channel or SpaceX’s website at 4:33pm ET to see astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken get launched on spacecraft Crew Dragon from the Florida coast. Today’s launch will be the rocket’s first attempt and future launches are scheduled for May 30 at 3:22pm ET and May 31 at 3pm ET.

This could mark a new era for space travel. Who knows, maybe 30 years from now we’ll all be trading our summer vacations at the beach for walks on the moon.
