Disney has done it again. The Hollywood studio broke its own record, reaching $7.67 billion in a groundbreaking accomplishment of box office sales for the newest The Lion King film. Not only did they surpass their own 2016 box office record, but they have become the first-ever Hollywood studio to pass the $5 billion international thresholds.
The revamp of the beloved Disney film drew the masses, not simply because of its timeless reputation, but to hear the revered and talented cast, which included Beyoncé and Donald Glover. In North America alone, within over 4,000 theaters, The Lion King grossed $185 million. With Frozen 2, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker releasing before the year's end, Disney's success is showing no signs of stopping. Disney's president of distribution, Cathleen Taff, recognized their success saying "we've had a spectacular run this weekend. We really did know we had something special with (The Lion King) given its popularity with fans of all ages."
