The stacked list comprises of several familiar faces who made the past virtual year a little more bearable

The nominees for the 2021 Webby Awards, its 25th iteration, have finally been announced, after deliberation by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS) from the almost 13,500 global entries received.

Several prominent public figures who played a large part in the public discourse of 2020 and 2021 have been nominated in some form, including John Mayer, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Frank Sinatra, Russell, Brand, Billie Eilish, Rosalía, Sir David Attenborough, BTS, and Ryan Reynolds, among others.

The viral sensation “If Cardi B Did the Sound Effects for Star Wars – Episode II” also secured a nomination, giving Cardi a stake at the awards. Megan Thee Stallion managed to nab multiple nominations, including for the #SavageChallenge on TikTok. Rihanna’s Savage Not Sorry social campaign also picked up a couple of nods, as did Trevor Noah’s “The Daily Social Distancing Show,” the 2020 MTV VMAs, and Global Citizen’s One World concert. Of all organizations, Google (22), HBO (20), and Comedy Central (19) racked up the most mentions.

Honoring the best of the internet, the 2021 Webby Awards has a more special honor to deliver. The announced nominees are not just ones that made the best use of their virtual platform, but the ones that used it to do some good and connect with people better, as a large part of the world shifted their lives to the virtual sphere. “The 25th Annual Webby Nominees represent far more than innovation,” said Webby Awards Executive Director Claire Graves in a statement. “Despite so much adversity this year, the creators behind our Nominated work have found new and exciting ways to use their platforms and creativity to help the world stay connected.”

Every nominee is also eligible to win the two biggest awards of the ceremony: The Webby Award, voted on by the Academy, and The Webby People’s Voice Award, voted for by people across the world on the website. The winners of all the awards will be announced on May 18 in a virtual show hosted by Jameela Jamil, available to watch on their website.
