The (Slightly Definitive) Meme Guide to Spotify Wrapped 2020

You know what’s better than revealing your musical taste to the world? Making memes about it.

The biggest part of the holiday season is here, the day that so many of us await with excitement, anticipation, and dread: Christm- Spotify Wrapped Day!

The internet is currently going bonkers as more and more people share their Spotify Wrapped playlists for 2020. For those not in the know, Spotify’s annual Wrapped feature compiles statistics of an individual’s listening habits, along with a playlist of their most-listened to songs over the year. Spotify is currently the top trending topic on Twitter, with Bad Bunny, the Weeknd, and Dua Lipa among the most globally listened-to artists this year.

Considering that nothing this year has been “typical,” it’s fair to assume that a lot of people have some feelings on the phenomenon. And a lot of that has been expressed through the evergreen language of memes. So, to celebrate that, here’s a look at the 10 kinds of memes (or people making memes) you’ll typically see on Spotify Wrapped Day 2020.

The one who regrets everything

Let’s be real, not all of us necessarily have the most edgelord taste in music. Or a real cohesive one, at that. So it’s not uncommon to look at your Wrapped and go “huh? This is what I listened to?”

The real fan

Some people, however, look on this day with a lot more excitement, probably because their playlists don’t induce a lot of trauma. Or they enjoy seeing what it does to other people.

The one making the statements

If you’re feeling like you’ve been on cloud nine with your Wrapped, here’s someone to give you a little peek behind the curtain, so to speak.

The one who’s late to the party

This could be applied to a number of scenarios, but it’s usually for the person who jumps on to the trend a little later than the rest. You have the time, don’t worry.

The Apple Music user

Of course, you can’t not pay tribute to the ones who started it all, Apple Music. However, at this time, they’re mostly looking in from the sidelines, maybe with regret? Or, probably, annoyance?

The complete outliers

Even so, though, there’s the ones who find the feature a little foreign altogether. Like YouTube music users, for example: not part of the majority, or the largest minority of Apple users. Where do they go?

The scared one

It’s hard to deny that our playlists say a lot about us and who we are at a specific point of time. And, in the prime of her life, Glee’s Sue Sylvester really has the perfect way to encapsulate that thought. Speaking of which…

The Gleek

Maybe it’s all the Sue Sylvester memes, or maybe it’s the fact that Glee and its cast has been in constant conversation this past year. Is there ever a bad time to be a Gleek, though?…No, I’m actually asking, is there?

The super fan

You can always count on Spotify to reveal your slightly intense love for any artist in particular, to whatever disturbing degree that may be.

The one who lost track of time

And finally, there’s those who pay attention to the other things the Wrapped says that isn’t about your exclusive listening preferences. Like how we’ve been stuck at home for the past nine months.
