The Weeknd’s Super Bowl Performance Will Become a Documentary

Showtime’s “The Show” will provide behind-the-scenes footage of the historic 2021 Super Bowl Halftime presentation.

The Weeknd’s Super Bowl appearance is truly the gift that keeps on giving: Showtime has announced that the meme-ridden performance will be the main subject of “The Show,” a new documentary that promises to take the audience behind the scenes of the mega-production.

Directed by Nadia Hallgren – who’s also behind the Michelle Obama documentary “Becoming” – and produced by Pepsi’s in-house content studio and Boardwalk Pictures, the 90-minute film will chronicle the months of work leading to the big day and the challenges faced by the team to make the production happen in these unprecedented conditions.

The documentary will feature first-time Halftime Show executive producer Jesse Collins,  and executive producers Roc Nation, along with XO’s La Mar Taylor (creative director for The Weeknd), creative set designer Es Devlin, Lila Nikole (the first Latina costume designer at the Halftime Show), Bruce Rodgers on set build, producer Dionne Harmon, and choreographer Charm La’Donna.

“The pressure to deliver an iconic, memorable and entertaining performance is felt well beyond the artist, as there are a number of people – behind the scenes – who are vital to its success,” Pepsi’s VP of Marketing Todd Kaplan said in a statement to Variety.  “With our new documentary coming to Showtime, we are taking fans on the emotional and thrilling journey of what it takes to make the biggest show of the year – with the added complexity of doing so amidst a global pandemic.”

“The Show” is expected to be released later this year.
