TikTokTips Counters False Information on the #ForYouPage

Stopping the (alleged) social media subterfuge, six seconds at a time.

Maybe, TikTok isn’t the most accurate site for news surrounding ongoing strife (we’re shocked, of course). The app, most prominently used amongst the ‘Zoomer’ generation, has been increasingly criticized as ‘propaganda’ and a source of false information. And rightfully so—there’s the barrage of risks that come with any social media usage, wherein users are able to spread their own subjective views in a matter of seconds.

Still, considering the need for factual information regarding the pandemic and recent protests, there’s been an outpour of dissent. Among the app’s (many) critics is none other than Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who encourages TikTok-ing only “if you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.” (He has no commentary on state-sponsored surveillance within the United States).

Tldr; there’s a problem. And TikTok just might have a solution: the site announced ‘TikTokTips’ recently, a set of PSAs meant to ensure proper internet etiquette. The videos include notable creators @shreksdumpster, @gabe, @cosette, @chemteacherphil, and the Pomeranian @hi_im_chewie
