Timothée Chalamet Looks Otherworldly in First Pictures of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Adaptation

The young movie star takes a turn for the intergalactic.

A first official look at Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi film Dune is here, and based on the first surfaced images, it’s an otherworldly project that is headed straight for blockbuster success. Timothée Chalamet is seen walking on a foreign landscape, starring as protagonist Paul Atreides, as he awaits a spacecraft to transport him and his family to their new home, Arrakis. His family inherited ownership of the desert planet, placing them in opposition to the rival royal families and the planet’s pre-existing indigenious population.

“The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts,” Chalamet told Vanity Fair about his decision to sign on to Dune. “He thinks he’s going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully a decade later, or something like that.”

Among a star-studded cast including Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and many others, Chalamet brings the space-travelling fantasy to life in a contemporary rendition of the classic film. For Villeneuve, the sci-fi storyline speaks far beyond intergalactica, it’s a testament to the Earth’s ever-changing  landscape. “No matter what you believe, Earth is changing, and we will have to adapt,” he tells Vanity Fair. “That’s why I think that Dune, this book, was written in the 20th century. It was a distant portrait of the reality of the oil and the capitalism and the exploitation—the overexploitation—of Earth. Today, things are just worse. It’s a coming-of-age story, but also a call for action for the youth.”
