Timothée Chalamet is slated to play Willy Wonka in an upcoming Warner Bros feature, Deadline reports. Wonka will tell the origin story of the eccentric Roald Dahl character and his adventures before opening his fantastic chocolate factory.

According to the report, the project will also mark the first time the Oscar-nominated actor gets to perform musical acts and show off his singing and dancing abilities on film – some of which the internet has already seen in multiple of his pre-Call Me By Your Name fame videos

Wonka will be directed by Paddington’s Paul King, with a screenplay by King and Simon Farnaby. Prior writers include Simon Rich, Simon Stephenson, Jeff Nathanson, and Steven Levenson. The project is being produced by David Heyman and Luke Kelly, with Michael Siegel and Alexandra Derbyshire as executive producers.

This is the third time the character is adapted for the big screen by Warner Bros, following 1971’s portrayal by Gene Wilder and 2005’s performance by Johnny Depp. Plot details are still unknown, but this will be reportedly the first time Charlie Bucket won’t appear. The film is set to open in theaters in March 2023.

The last time Chalamet graced the silver screen was in Great Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of Little Women. He has at least three upcoming film appearances to debut this year: Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, and Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up.
