Tom Ford Channels Hope in Spring/Summer 2021 Collections

The collections aim to be an “expression of joy and happiness and a kind of extravagance that is not really extravagant at all” amidst the current pandemic.

Last night at approximately 7pm EST, Tom Ford presented his Spring/Summer 2021 menswear collection via RUNWAY360. The designer presented a total of 37 men’s looks, which were put together during the height of the pandemic.

In an Instagram post, the designer also talked about the collection calling it “incredibly difficult.” He also elaborated on some of the struggles he and his team faced while putting the collection together.

The collection was created during a “somewhat casual moment as it relates to fashion but a time in which we need clothes that make us smile. Clothes that make us feel good.” It was inspired by the sudden rise of loungewear culture, but also the glitz and glam of the fashion world in the 70’s. He references models such as Pat Cleveland or Donna Jordon, whose smiles and glamour served as sources of inspiration for the direction of his current collection.

Ford also reflected on his own experience during the pandemic via a press release, explaining his own struggles to regain his footing as a designer after being subjected to the sudden shift in society. “The global zeitgeist always affects fashion and for me this longing for a hopeful spring translates into somewhat classic relaxed clothes but clothes that make me smile. Clothes to have a bit of fun in,” he said.
