Tyler, the Creator Comments On His UK Ban
The artist brings up homophobia allegations and controversy in his recent interview with The Guardian.
In spite of being a multi-hyphenate talent with a fan base spanning the world, there was a time when Tyler, the Creator was banned from the United Kingdom. In his interview with The Guardian, the rapper has divulged the details of his four-year ban from the UK, lifted earlier this year.
What got him in that kind of trouble were the lyrics from his first two albums, Bastard and Goblin. Back in 2015, the musician flew in to play at Reading and Leeds festivals and was taken into detention immediately upon his arrival. The home secretary at the time Theresa May used anti-terrorism legislation to prohibit Tyler, the Creator from entering the country, saying his work “encourages violence and intolerance of homosexuality” and “fosters hatred with views that seek to provoke others to terrorist acts.”
The artist was taken aback by the severity and duration of this no-entry ban. what was initially considered controversial now feels totally unnecessary and somewhat absurd. “I got treated like I was a murderer,” Tyler shares. “I’m happy that I got back. I feel like I won some invisible fight.”
The musician and artist released his sixth full-length album titled IGOR earlier this year. Tyler, the Creator recently alleged that he had made American Airlines’ ‘no-fly terrorist list’.
