For Fall 2020 Versace presented a mixed-gender collection at Milan Fashion Week.

Versace Fall 2020

We seem to be in the middle of a Versace renaissance, and we’re loving it! Since the Michael Kors acquisition Donatella has upped her game and is killing it with every collection. Last season we saw the house reunite with JLo marking 20 years since the popstar first wore ‘that dress’. For this season we saw Versace take it another step further with the idea of dressing beyond gender.

It was the first time that the brand featured an equal number of men and women on the runway. The show featured designs that had been adapted into both women’s and men’s looks. The crossover inspiration was successful and offered a strong collection of menswear. It also seems like a smart move to ensure that runway presentations survive by evolving into something new.

The collection featured relaxed tailoring and elements of elevated street and sportswear. There was a real mix of smart casual; it was relaxed glamour Versace-style. Jackets and coats were shown alongside smart blazers, knitted sweaters, button-ups, ties and pullovers. Smart suit pants were worn with sneakers and tailored shorts with galoshes. The show opened with looks of grey and black but moved into a colorful section with bright prints, a Versace trademark. Grayscale prints were also shown, we saw zebra prints created from sequins and a bold graphic design. Next came a retro section inspired by the 70’s. We saw brown bomber jackets with wide-leg denim pants or worn with patchwork pants made from snakeskin and leather. What followed were elevated sporty looks before the show closed with a range of formal outfits. A pink suit proceeded uber-smart blazers and tuxedo jackets.

There was also a big focus on accessories. The models wore Versace sneakers and chunky rubber boots with brightly colored-rimmed shades. They carried holdalls, bags, mini purses and wore brooches, with necklaces. Most of the looks were teamed with hats and Versace-logo socks.

Speaking on the collection and her decision to include menswear, Donatella said, “the new generation does not care about gender, [for them] it is about having a point of view … What I tried to show in this collection is that sexuality comes from the brain first.” She later commented on Instagram that the show was a “celebration of equality and diversity.”
