VMAN’S TOP 5 PARIS MENSWEAR SS21 COLLECTIONS

VMagazine’s Fashion Director, Gro Curtis, picks out the best from Paris’s menswear fashion scene.

Paris is a city of extremes simply because every designer follows the beat of his own drum. Even though designers can look at each other’s work they always seem to mind their own business. Womenswear shows came with numerous co-ed collections but these big five proved to be in the league of their own.

Ami Look 32

Designer Alexandre Mattiussi knows a thing or two about creating a signature but unpretentious wardrobe for boys and men dreaming of capturing the essence of a unique french way of dressing. Key of Ami’s success is in always launching clothes with reversible effects. They can be worn not just by you but by your boyfriend, girlfriend, brother, sister, lover or even father. Mattiussi serves us coolness usually reserved only for lucky guys with Paris address.

Balenciaga Look 18

Pope of streetwear meets couture phenomena, Demna Gvasalia, presented a perfect mix between powerful and comfortable when it comes to outerwear. Demna plays by his own rules. This hybrid of a bathrobe looks like the comfiest armor one can desire for (un)stable spring ahead of us.

Balmain Look 85

Olivier Rousteing loves an 80’s shoulder and we all know that. But what is refreshing is his ability to reinvent something that may look trivial at first sound. Even though his tailoring is oversized his jackets are cut with supreme precision. In this look you can see what looks like a tuxedo version of cycling shorts combined with a dramatic jacket. Idea on paper sounds absurd but in real, Olivier’s life? It’s brilliant.

Givenchy Look 19

No one knows how to connect hardware details with classic tailoring like newly appointed creative director of Givenchy, Matthew Willams. Ability to revive the most classic pieces from the menswear wardrobe is Matthew’s forte. He does what can now be called neo-tailoring. By taking references from utility clothes and everyday hardware elements and bringing them to classic suit Williams is creating his own language.

Maison Margiela Look 5

This white jacket is both draped and deconstructed, fitted and pointy. It’s a pure poetry of fabric created by John Galliano, possibly the most important fashion poet in the second half of 20th century. His new collection blends classic Galliano with classic Margiela and the result is simply breathtaking.
