Seventeen year-old pop sensation Shawn Mendes has just released the music video for "Treat You Better"—the lead single off his second album Illuminate, due September 23. This release is coming hot off the tails of the Canadian singer's last record, 2015's Handwritten, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart—and sold 106,000 copies in its first week. The album's third single, "Stitches" reached number four on the Billboard hot 100, and can still be heard on radios just about everywhere.

The new video, out today, shows a decidedly more mature-looking Mendes, having filled out his adorable-but-lanky teenage frame into more of a Marlon Brando physique, with a more mature style to match. A rather literal interpretation of the single, the video plays out like a classic love story, finding the young heartthrob fighting for the honor of his crush and proving that he can, in fact, treat her better than the abusive scumbag she was with previously.

Thanks to his aforementioned successes, a formidable social following (he has over 11 million followers on Instagram), and a stint opening for her majesty Taylor Swift on her 1989 World Tour, Mendes has already earned accolades from Times (most influential teens of 2014 and 2015) and Forbes (30 under 30 for 2016). This is all in addition to his burgeoning modeling career. There's little doubt that the young pop star will only continue to rise with the release of Illuminate this fall.
