As the fashion police collectively freaks out over a certain men’s shirt from the Balenciaga fall 2018 collection, we are reminded that, however impractical or Halloween costume-worthy, some of our most memorable cultural moments are borne out of unexpected mash-ups. Whether Apple pie and American cheese or chicken and waffles, Paul McCartney and Rihanna or Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat, cross-pollination has long been part of the fabric of pop culture—and, ever-increasingly fashion is no different. Herein, we round-up some of our favorite fashion hybrids—from bondage-infused headphones to mutant Nikes—which can only add to the wonderfully weird maximalism of that Balenciaga dress shirt.

As both a bona fide commercial success and a notorious disruptor, Balenciaga’s Demna Gvasalia is fashion’s foremost trickster, undermining fashion sensibilities every step of his rise . This much-hyped men’s shirt (really two shirts grafted on top of each other), which retails for $1,300, is the embodiment of the house’s mix of commercialism and cerebral disruption. Plus, the two-faced shirt is the perfect uniform for Gemini season.

Nike’s Fanny Pack Slides

Like flip-flops did last year in the form of slides, fanny packs are having a Revenge of the Nerds-style Renaissance (see: Virgil’s Off-White fanny). Leave it to Nike to combine these two one-mocked accessories for most devilishly hype-worthy shoe of the season.

Dusty x Nike Sneakers

As devotees of the ugly sneaker trend, we believe that the higher the chunky sole, the closer to the fashion gods. These custom shoes by New York-based designer Dusty take the controversial trend to the highest degree—and the results are an irresistibly ugly-beautiful creation. They may not be easy to run in, but they still make us say, “Just do it.”

Ssense x Arca Headphones

Forget that noise with these noise-cancelling, leather-daddy headphones by Venezuelan singer Arca. While this $6,000 headgear is clearly extra, the suede-covered, over-the-ear technology is sure to foster a listening experience like no other. Just make sure to press “pause” to hear the safe word.

Walter Van Beirendonck brooches

These brooches, seen during Paris Men’s Fashion Week a few years bag, may seem like an odd marriage of kink and Victorian-era accessories. But the toy-shaped baubles functioned as both a cheeky sex-positive message and a defense of free speech following vandalism to Paul McCarthy’s similarly shaped sculpture just prior to that season’s shows. And they did just what the best fashion is designed to do: cause a stir.
