Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA Launches 36 Cinema
Designed to live stream movies with real time commentary, the first installment of 36 Cinema sees RZA dropping insight on ‘Shaolin vs Wu Tang’, the movie that started it all.
For the launch of RZA’s new project 36 Cinema, the Wu-Tang Clan member is starting off by a live screening with commentary of the classic kung fu movie Shaolin vs Wu Tang. The film, released in 1983, is credited for inspiring the hip-hop collective’s name and is sampled in Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)’s opening track “Bring Da Ruckus.”
Along with the Hollywood Theatre’s head programmer Dan Halsted, RZA “will provide live commentary during the film,” reads 36 Cinema’s website. “Their collective knowledge and personal stories related to Shaolin vs Wu Tang will give viewers a deeper appreciation for the movies we love.”
Halsted is believed to have the only 35mm print of Shaolin vs Wu Tang in North America, and the digital viewing will be a “pristine transfer” of the film, the event’s description says. “Even though this movie has had a great impact on hip hop culture, very few people have seen it.”
Moderating questions from viewers is 36 Chamber‘s co-founder Mustafa Shaikh, with the screening on May 8th starting at 9:15 pm EDT. Tickets are available now for $10 here.
