YUNGBLUD Channels David Bowie to Soundtrack The Mars Landing of NASA’s Perseverance

Bowie’s “Life on Mars?” sounded off the celebration post the historic rover’s landing

NASA celebrated a truly historic moment with the landing of its most sophisticated rover, Perseverance, on Mars, the Red Planet. The rover will scout for any signs of microbial life on the planet and collect Martian rock and samples to bring back to Earth for further research. And to celebrate the landing, NASA recruited YUNGBLUD in full David Bowie form.

The English singer-songwriter performed a cover of Bowie’s iconic “Life on Mars?” to soundtrack the landing and the ensuing celebration. He originally performed the song for last month’s “A Bowie Celebration: Just For One Day!” concert, which was produced by Mike Garson and Rolling Live Studios. The David Bowie Estate commissioned the use of the song for the occasion.

“To sing the pinnacle song by an artist that truly defined my whole existence,” YUNGBLUD said, “in a search for extraterrestrial existence was one of the best moments of my entire life. The punx went to Mars!”

The performance was backed up by a virtual orchestra, complete with NASA flashing pictures of people from all around the world celebrating the landing. The performance ended with the first images from Mars sent by the rover.
