Last week, Zachary Quinto's Instagram profile photo disappeared. The sudden disappearance of his picture is tied to the World Wildlife Fund and Heineken Brewery Tiger Beers' #3890Tigers campaign, an initiative encouraging users to delete their profile picture or create art that raises awareness of the alarmingly low amount of tigers in the world today.

When approached about the opportunity, noted animal lover Quinto immediately jumped at the chance to get involved. "I've been building my awareness about the poaching climate around the world  in the last six months, and when I came to realize that there are less than 4000 wild tigers left in the world, it was something that really resonated with me," Quinto said. "I like this initiative because there's a real opportunity to get people involved."

The role of Quinto and other celebrities in the campaign lies not just in raising awareness of the issue, but in encouraging donations that will go to help rangers doing the dangerous, on-the-ground conservation work that will ensure a future for the tigers. WWF tiger specialist Nilanga Jayasinghe points out that "[WWF hopes] to bring awareness to the plight of tigers and to ensure that the rangers have the capacity that they need to do their jobs." When prompted about the involvement of celebrities Jayasinghe points to their ability to crowdsource. "Celebrities have a wonderful reach that sometimes ordinary folks don't; they have audiences, fan bases eager to listen to what they have to say."

As U.S. attitudes toward environmental issues continue to shift against the goals of organizations like WWF, Quinto urges Americans to keep fighting the good fight. "We need to do to represent an ideology that's more forward thinking than the one that's espoused by this current administration," he says. "I think politically we are in a really challenging climateno pun intendedfor the environment and for the preservation of wildlife. I feel like anything we can do as a society to counteract the negative impact that this administration's shortsightedness has is really important."
