Tyler, The Creator Is Back With ‘Lumberjack’

The new track follows up on the mysterious billboards and hotlines and signals a new album could be on the way.

After a series of mysterious promotions that started last week with billboards in Los Angeles and New York, a hotline, and a special website, Tyler, The Creator has finally dropped a new single on Wednesday, titled “Lumberjack.”

The release came accompanied by a short Wes Anderson-esque video where the rapper is seen reading, journaling, dancing on top of a stack of suitcases, and even getting his nails done before venturing out in a snowstorm. The clip’s direction is credited to Wolf Haley – one of Tyler, The Creator’s alter egos.

The new track samples Gravediggaz’s “2 Cups of Blood” and seems to have been produced by DJ Drama, who can be heard in mixtape-style shoutouts. The lyrics include a sort of “thank-you” note to Tyler’s parents and even a nod to Drake – all in the playful style the Odd Future alum has become known for.

Earlier this week, Tyler, The Creator shared two versions of a pastel-colored teaser video titled “Side Street” on Twitter and YouTube. At the end of the videos, a title card reads “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST,” the same tagline used on the billboards, which also promoted a toll-free number. Callers were reportedly able to listen to new music previews by the rapper.

His latest studio album, Igor, was released in 2019 and won the Grammy for Best Rap Album. Tyler, The Creator has since been featured in tracks like Channel Tres’ “Fuego” and Brent Faiyaz’s “Gravity.” He’s also composed “Tell Me How” as a jingle for Coca-Cola.
